Bringing Betas Together

By Chip Lawson ’81; President, Theta Delta of Beta Theta Pi Alumni Association

Have you communicated with a Beta lately? How about a Theta Delta Beta? I know that I have.

One of our main goals as an alumni board is to assist in bringing us together. Whether it’s for a football game at the Shoe, meeting with the chapter, or perhaps for our annual meeting, it’s important to get the word out to everyone. However, we struggle with this because our contact information is not up-to-date. In this new world of instant contact by email, texting, Facebook and the like, we really have no excuses.

Let me give you a few facts: we have over 1,450 living Theta Delta Betas, of which about half live in Ohio. Unfortunately, there are over 1,100 alumni who have no email address on file, over 200 have no phone number, and for over 50 we have no information at all. We continue to send out the Theta Delta Dragon, which is currently our main source of communication with the alumni (and our largest expense outside the house), but we want to do more.

I am requesting that each of you go to our website www.OSUBeta.org and log in. On the top left corner, under the picture of the house, is a link for “First Time Login”. Click on that link and follow the prompts to get yourself registered. First, please update your contact information, and be sure to leave your email address. (You can find your Member ID, required for first time login, printed above your name on the mailing panel of this newsetter). Our site contains areas to post events, share stories, and even leave photos from the past or the present. You can register for the Beta Smoker in May and even make a contribution to our annual fund. Browse through it and you may find a posting from a brother who you haven’t thought of in years. If you like, an even easier way to stay in contact is to text “OSUBETA” to 90210 on your cellular phone and you will automatically be sent information about alumni events.

In addition, there is a link to the chapter’s website www.OSUBeta.com (note: that’s .com, not .org) which contains current information about these young men. Take a look at their site and see what activities are going on at the house.

We are always looking for better ways to communicate with our alumni. If you have an idea, a thought or perhaps a suggestion, please contact me personally. You will find my contact information on the website under Officers. I hope to see you at the Beta Roundup on Thursday, May 17th.
