Delta Chi Michigan Chapter Life during COVID-19 – Fall 2020

Hello Alumni and Current Brothers of the University of Michigan Chapter of Delta Chi Fraternity.  As reported in previous E-Delts about the Fall Semester of 2020, things for this school year have been very different than previous years.  Unfortunately, the changes have not all been for the good!!!

From No Football to Crappy Football, Social Distancing instead of Social Functions (well maybe there were social functions if 24 of 31 Brothers living in the Chapter House got COVID-19 and co-incidentally a similar number of Chi Omegas also got COVID-19 around the same time, no meals together – order them on the App and take them to the room to eat, no exercise walking to class because they were all remote and so on and so on.  Things that we Alumni took for granted just were not the same.

The good news is that no one has contracted a severe form of the illness – after symptoms subsided, we had the house “fogged” and there have not been any recurrences of the illness.

Alumni Profile – Lee Brandt ’63

Lee Brandt was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he found his high school sweetheart and his passion for flying, which inevitably led him to the University of Michigan for an aeronautical engineering degree in 1959. In the spring semester of 1960, Lee pledged Delta Chi, one of only four in that pledge class. Since then, he has raised a family and had a very successful career. Click “Read More” to see the full story.

WiFi Network at Chapter House Funding

Early last year, the pandemic forced our undergraduate brothers to abandon the in-person classroom experience at Michigan and move to online classes.  This placed a tremendous strain on the WIFI network at the house. The Alumni Corporation has implemented improvements to the system, to allow more members to be online simultaneously, including: more hubs/access sites, greater bandwidth, and faster speed.  The goal is to give our brothers the ability to successfully take courses and study at the house (which is their home).

1705 Hill St: Making “The (New) House” a Home

When many of us joined Delta Chi at Michigan, one our primary motivations may have been simply to find some place to live. We’d been in the dorms, and knew we had to try something different. So initially, what we came to call “The House” was simply that… a house to live in.

It was only after we joined the fraternity, and moved in with our Brothers in the Bond, that The House became a home. And what a home that old house was! Like any old family home, it needed constant care and update. In our own ways, we all in turn made it our own, whether through pledge week repair and rebuilding sessions, or just in the constant chores of trying to keep an old house clean, operating, and functioning.
