Jim Manos ’73 Exemplifies Leadership and Philanthropy in the Face of Adversity

Thank you to Jim Manos ’73, former Beta President from 1972/73, for participating in our Q&A. Jim currently suffers from MS, and it took him considerable time to submit his update, and for that, we thank him.

Why did you join Beta over other fraternities? Tell us your very first impression of the house and chapter that first year.
I went Beta because two Betas contacted me at home in the summer of ’69. When I got to OSU, I thought the chapter and house were AWESOME. I never visited another fraternity. We were the largest fraternity with about 100 members, and we always did great in intramural sports.

Which songs best define your college experience?
All of the Beatles’ songs.

How did Theta Delta make you into the man you are today?
Theta Delta made me into the man I am due to its fellowship, since I was an only child, and its leadership opportunities. Leadership makes you a stronger person.

Tell us about a brother who was a mentor or who went beyond the call of duty to help you.
Bill Goepfert ’72 helped me a lot.

If you were walking onto the Ohio State campus as a young freshman, what advice would you give to the younger you?
Study hard and be open-minded.

Jim has been married to his wife, Paula, for 29 years and they have three daughters (Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Sarah). He reports that he went on disability with Multiple Sclerosis in 1998, and currently lives in First Community Village, a long-term care facility in Upper Arlington, where he enjoys having visitors.

This past April, Jim participated in the Walk MS at the Columbus Zoo to help raise funds for research and local programs. This Theta Delta alum has been the captain of the Overcomers team (talk about leadership!) for the last nine years. During this time, he and his team have successfully raised over $100,000 to support the fight against MS. We are so proud to have Jim as a brother of Theta Delta!

You can contact Jim at [email protected].
