WHATEVER HAPPENED TO XXX – UPDATES ON MICHIGAN DELTA CHI’S

The eDelt editors plan to publish a section called, “Whatever Happened to Brother XXX.”    We will be sending you emails to request information over the next year.   Hopefully you will respond in a timely manner.

To give you some idea of what we will be looking for:

We want to know what you are doing.   If you can’t think of what you want to highlight we have attached a list of items to guide you.   It can be long or short since we are not limited by article length.   You could include just a resume’ used for work or job searches, or what you have posted on LinkedIn or Doximetry, etc.  Pictures would be great.    We are trying to make it easy for you to respond.    I am sure those in your timeframe will appreciate the update since we all tend to drift apart once we start on life’s journey.  Thank you for your help in this new eDelt section

The process has started and we will feature in this issue:

Dave Falconer ’61; Raymond Drapek ’80; Dan McDonald ’91; David Bacon ’06; Patrick Forrest, M.D. ’06; Paul Van Gasse ’06; Joseph Fazi ’07 Gary Poirier ’07; Chris Bence ’10.

1. What was your undergraduate degree and major – what year did you graduate?   Did you go to graduate school?  Where and what year

Computer Science (BS, LSA), 1991.  I attended the University of Arizona for my MS in Computer Science, graduating in 1993.

2. Where have you worked since graduation:  Company, job title, job description.  Any interesting occurrences or projects?  Military service.

Did multiple summer jobs in the industry before graduation, including summer 1990 rooming with the ONLY person who was present in all three parts (Marching Band, EECS, and Delta Chi) of my Michigan life: Tom Thomas (’91 BSE Computer Engineering).

After grad school I worked for two years at the US Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC. We built one of the first Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and THE first IP Security (IPsec) implementation for BSD UNIX.

I continued with Internet software development at Sun Microsystems: Five years in California, nine more, plus one year under Oracle occupation, in Massachusetts.

After Oracle screwed everything up for Sun, what was OpenSolaris (Oracle closed it) became illumos, and I’ve had multiple illumos jobs from that point leading up to and including today. I’m currently (as of October 2025) a Distinguished Engineer for Edgecast Cloud.

 3.  Where have you lived, approximate years?

After graduating, I spent a second summer in Rochester, MN interning for IBM. I then headed to grad school at the Univerisity of Arizona in Tucson. I spend 2/3 of 1992 in North Carolina interning for a different IBM group, and returned for all of 1993 in Tucson.

I already mentioned California (Silicon Valley during the first dot-com boom), and Massachusetts (because you can’t start a family without either too-small a place, a 1 hour each-way commute, or I-won-startup-roulette money).

4.  Tell us about your family.  Tell us about your partner and what he/she is doing – jobs, etc..  Any children and what they are doing—activities, academics, sports, etc.    Are they in a college and if so where and what degree are they going for.

I met my wife Wendy (a teacher-turned-writer -> https://wendymmcdonald.com/ ) during my time at NRL. Two years into Sun we reconnected, did the long-distance thing, and I convinced her to move out to California. We got married, and moved to Massachusetts because there was a Sun facility that had half my team there already, and (relative to California) more affordable housing.

We raised our twins Penelope (she/her) and Zephyr (they/them) in Mass, and they are both obtaining their BFAs in Illustration & Writing from MassART (P) and Animation from Montserrat College of Art (Z).

5.  Any hobbies and/or interests, any volunteer work.   Be specific it you can

In the last couple of years I’ve started to actually play percussion again, this time with a old-folks’ concert band near where I live. It’s good to shake off those cobwebs.

6.  Places you vacation.  Do you travel places?

Wendy and I, and then later the four of us, have travelled to a bunch of different places.  In the past 10-ish years all four of us been to Hawaii, San Francisco and the greater Bay Area (visiting our old haunts), Cape Cod, and Ireland.

7.  Any illnesses you might like to mention or share?

No.

8.  Do you keep in touch with other Delta Chi’s?

Mostly via Facebook or email. Tried to meet some folks in person en route to Michigan (see next question), but couldn’t work out the timing.

9.  When is last time you were in Ann Arbor?   Have you been in the new house?

My last employer (now part of Edgecast) had an office in Monroe, MI, which allowed me to visit campus, the new house, and Hill Auditorium for my only Band-o-Rama where I haven’t been on stage.

10.  Would you like to mention your business for anyone that might be searching for your product, expertise, a job or just information to help a Brother out with?

I’m a core-team member for the illumos project: illumos is the open-source continuation of what was OpenSolaris.  Earlier in my career I was deep in Internet Protocol R&D. I’ve co-written three RFCs (the Internet Engineering Task Force’s Request For Comments documents), and have expertise in Operating Systems, Networking, Software Engineering, and Open Source engagement. Unless it’s a direct conflict of interest, and it’s not just “fix my computer”, I’m available for consulting, or discussions about system software and/or open source.

Try this:  If you’re on a Mac, or a BSD UNIX, and have a Terminal window, type “man ipsec” (or on illumos or Solaris, “man pf_key”), you will see my name in the STANDARDS section.

11.  Would you give your phone number and/or email address so others might contact you?  Would be a nice time to re-connect.

My email is [email protected]

1. What was your undergraduate degree and major – what year did you graduate?   Did you go to graduate school?  Where and what year

2010 – Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Mechanical Engineering

2016 – Master of Business Administration from University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business (part-time evening program from Jan 2013 -Dec 2016)

2. Where have you worked since graduation:  Company, job title, job description.  Any interesting occurrences or projects?  Military service.

I have been at DTE full-time since obtaining my undergraduate degree (and also completed two student co-ops prior to my graduation in the summers of 2008 and 2009). Since 2010, I have worked in many roles of increasing responsibility. I have lead teams that developed the dispatch strategy for DTE Electric’s power generation assets, managed the operations and logistics of fuel transportation from origins to power generation assets, managed the procurement of fuel and transportation of fuel for the power generation assets, and drove the overall strategic direction for DTE Gas as the Chief of Staff to the President of the gas utility. Highlights include developing operational, financial, and risk management materials for DTE’s Board of Directors, leading the negotiation of a $1B+ fuel transportation agreement, and leading teams that achieved consistently high engagement scores as published by Gallup.

In April of 2024, I was promoted to my current role of Director – Gas Control & Planning. In this role, I oversee the safe, reliable, and efficient monitoring and control of DTE Gas’s natural gas transmission pipeline system around the clock. My responsibilities include the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and field Operational Technology (OT) assets, including OT cybersecurity maturity and regulatory compliance. I also direct the DTE Gas transmission system planning, system outage management, gas measurement, nominations, and gas choice teams.

3.  Where have you lived, approximate years?

I have lived in Ann Arbor for almost 20 years! I moved here from Farmington Hills, where I grew up, in the fall of 2006 to start my undergraduate journey, fell in love with the city, and never left. In fact, we still tailgate for almost all home games with our two young daughters (before returning home to watch the game from the comfort of our couch while our youngest takes her nap).

4.  Tell us about your family.  Tell us about your partner and what he/she is doing – jobs, etc..  Any children and what they are doing—activities, academics, sports, etc.    Are they in a college and if so where and what degree are they going for.

My wife, Chrissy, and I have two daughters (Rory – 5 and Frankie – 2). Chrissy is a manager of pre-surgical and post-surgical operations and the director of quality at the Bone & Joint Surgery Center in Novi, MI. Rory just started Young 5s in Dexter and is really enjoying it. She also loves gymnastics, dance, and swimming. Frankie is living her best life in the Butterfly Room at daycare, and she loves gymnastics and swimming like her big sister. They also both love coloring.

5.  Any hobbies and/or interests, any volunteer work.   Be specific it you can

In the rare moments that I get free time, you can find me at a golf course. Chrissy and I also enjoy hanging with friends and catching a comedy show or live jazz.

Additionally, I have mentored high school students on career readiness and financial acumen through Detroit Economic Club’s Career Readiness Academy for the better part of the decade. I also volunteer through DTE a few times a year, and I have started raising money for Breast Cancer over the last two years. This is something I look forward to supporting for years to come as many women in my life have been directly impacted.

6.  Places you vacation.  Do you travel places?

Chrissy and I went on a few amazing trips before kids (Thailand and Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand, Greece and Croatia) and now focus on going to our families’ respective lake houses in Brooklyn, Michigan and Cheboygan, Michigan. We have gone on a couple Disney cruises with the kiddos, though the jury is still out as to whether we are a Disney family. I also go on at least one golf trip per year, including an annual trip where 12 of us play 90 holes in 5 days in a Ryder Cup-esque format. We pick a top 100 public course as the anchor round and build from there. This event is on par with the rest of the holidays throughout the year.

7.  Any illnesses you might like to mention or share?

Thankfully, no.

8.  Do you keep in touch with other Delta Chi’s?

Yes. I stay connected with many of the local Delta Chis that graduated a few years before me to a few years after me. I meet up with several out-state brothers on a relatively regular basis, including a few that join me on the annual golf trip.

9.  When is last time you were in Ann Arbor?   Have you been in the new house?

While I live in Ann Arbor, I have not been to the new house in a couple years. Raising young children has taken priority in recent years.

6.  Places you vacation.  Do you travel places?

This past year my wife and I were lucky enough to visit Denmark and Norway. We were lucky enough to enjoy some great food, ferry around the canals and fjords, visit my wife’s grandfather’s childhood house, etc.

7.  Any illnesses you might like to mention or share?

Thankfully, none.

8.  Do you keep in touch with other Delta Chi’s?

Absolutely! Both of my younger brother, Will and Jim Schutt, were Delta Chi’s and I obviously keep in touch with them. Jack Dean, Edwin Huicochea, Pat Horner, Rich Otto, Makis Papalambros, Jamie Capellari, Chris and Tom Bence are all great friends of mine who I talk with, play golf with, and enjoy a beer or two with regularly. (I’m sure there are a few brothers who I’m forgetting in that list)

9.  When is last time you were in Ann Arbor?   Have you been in the new house?

My wife and I took our two oldest children to the Michigan vs Wisconsin football game earlier this year. I unfortunately have not been able to check out the new house.
